"Earlier this year, we were sliding down the left side of that U with some very big monthly job losses," he says. "Going into next half of the year here, we could go up the right side into a recovery." And Thayer says June's steeper-than-expected job losses were a "disappointment" but not completely unexpected. "Unfortunately, we usually don't go in a straight path."
